Research Opportunities for Undergrads: BYU ME Students present at UCUR

In a massive show of cougar pride, BYU students made up nearly a third of all presenters at the Utah Conference of Undergraduate Research (UCUR) this February. The conference—which allows undergraduates from all disciplines and across all colleges and universities in Utah to present their research to members of the community—is an annual event BYU is always excited to attend.

This event serves as the preliminary judging competition to determine the teams that will advance to the SIOY Finals competition. SIOY Final Competition

The finalist teams will give their presentation to judges in front of a large crowd.  Each finalist team will receive $4,000 just for competing in the final event. Finals competition winners will receive additional cash awards of 1st place- $8,000, 2nd place - $6,000, 3rd place - $4,000, and Crowd Favorite - $2,000.  Those that attend will get free pizza and have a chance to win awesome prizes!

Mars Rover team takes third at competition

The Brigham Young University Mars Rover team competed against 31 teams from 15 countries in the three-day 2023 University Rover Competition the first week of June. They landed third place overall, making their way back onto the winners podium at the Mars Desert Research Station for the first time since 2017.

Batteries can be found in almost anything, but what happens when you push them to their limit? That’s what Dr. Jason Porter, one of the newest mechanical engineering faculty members at Brigham Young University, is researching to find out.

Dr. Carl Sorensen is concluding his 36 year career as a professor at Brigham Young University this summer. During his time here he has changed the face of engineering at BYU and made contributions that will last for generations.

Student Spotlight: Cody Messick

Mechanical Engineering senior Cody Messick has a passion for doing anything and everything to help others. For the Shanghai native, this currently means preparing to go from medical assisting, MCAT tutoring and mechanical engineering to medical school at the Mayo Clinic.
