The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing an MS or PhD in mechanical engineering. Deadlines for application are January 15th for Fall semester and September 1st for Winter semester. These are the only enrollment periods for which you can apply. Students who are accepted for fall semester may enroll earlier, upon departmental approval. However, enrollment cannot be delayed.
Applicants must have a BS in Mechanical Engineering or in a related program (other engineering, physical, or mathematical science programs). Applicants with a BS in a related program will be admitted provisionally and must take some or all undergraduate courses as outlined in the Student Handbooks. The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Coordinator may be contacted regarding which courses may be appropriate.
All applicants must upload an unofficial transcript. Students with a cumulative GPA below 3.0/4.0 are not eligible for admission. All applicants must submit scores for the NEW GRE exam. STATISTICS for average GPA and GRE scores for admitted applicants in recent years are listed in the catalog. Students with lower GRE scores than these may want to consider retaking the GRE exam. Only the higher scores will be taken into account.
All applicants must upload a resume and a statement of intent. Students should express their interest in conducting research in a specific area and completing a thesis or dissertation. Some of the areas of research currently being conducted can be viewed on the Research Areas webpages.
International students must meet certain additional requirements such as an English Language Proficiency test and a credential evaluation which includes a comprehensive course-by-course evaluation and calculation of a grade point average (GPA). For more information please visit the International Applicants section on the Graduate Studies website.
JOINT MS/MBA PROGRAM
If applying for the joint MS/MBA degree program, students must initiate a new and separate application for the MS and MBA programs, making sure to indicate joint degree on both applications and in the Statement of Intent. The GMAT test is required in addition to the GRE. More details can be found in the catalog.
To view tuition costs, visit Tuition Fees & Deadlines on the BYU Financial Services website. The ME department provides financial support to graduate students in the form of fellowships, graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships. For more details please see the Graduate Financial Support page. Students are encouraged to contact faculty members to explore research and mentoring opportunities. There is also funding available through the Graduate Studies Office, and information is available on the Graduate Studies website.
Applications submitted early will receive advance consideration.
